IVDD Treatment Cost Calculator

Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is the most common serious spinal condition in dachshunds, French bulldogs, corgis and other long-backed breeds — affecting roughly 1 in 4 dachshunds in their lifetime. Treatment costs vary widely depending on whether your dog needs conservative care or surgery. Use the calculator below to get a realistic estimate.

The cheapest IVDD treatment is the one you never need

Most IVDD episodes are triggered by an everyday jump on or off the couch or bed. Removing that impact is the single most effective way to protect a long-backed dog's spine — and it costs a fraction of a single vet bill.

How we estimate these costs

Estimates are built from published U.S. ranges for IVDD care. Conservative management (vet exam, X-rays and bloodwork, anti-inflammatory and pain medication, recheck visits, and crate-rest supplies) typically runs a few hundred to roughly $2,000. Surgical treatment adds a neurology/specialist consult, advanced imaging (MRI or CT, often $1,500–$3,000), decompressive surgery, several nights of hospitalization, and post-op medication — commonly totaling $3,000–$8,000 and reaching $10,000+ in high-cost areas or complex cases. We then adjust for dog size (larger dogs cost more for anesthesia, medication and surgical time) and for regional/clinic cost level. Optional rehab/physiotherapy and emergency after-hours fees are added when selected. Your actual cost should come from your veterinarian.
